The Pink Broom
Saturday, Nov 14, 2009

The Pink Broom is an annual fun curling event open to PRCL members and friends. This year, the event was held on the afternoon of Saturday, November 14th.
The Pink Broom is a great fun event that enables the participants to get to know their fellow PRCL curlers better in a less competitive environment.

History of the Pink Broom
by Roy Wilson
The Pink Broom, in its earliest inception, was the gay bonspiel in Vancouver out at UBC Thunderbird Winter Sports complex). My first memory of the Pink Broom was in 1986. It was a two-day affair with teams from out-of-province (Toronto mostly). It was fun and VERY social; we even had the drag queens serving shots of schnapps between ends! The Pink Broom became the Pac Invitational Bonspiel, then the Pac Cup ...
Around 1989 or 1990, we began the Pink Broom as a one day fun bonspiel. We had a broom painted pink and adorned with glitter and various sparkling stones - this was passed from one season's winner to the next - until it was passed to someone that didn't return (approx 1993).
The Pink Broom, as it exists today, was started around 1995. It has been a fun-filled one-day event, and a wonderful vehicle for new curlers to meet other league members in a fun way.
We have been negligent in keeping "records" of our history. The cups and plaques are the only records we've kept fairly up-to-date, but a written record of who won what and when was never kept. So many of us have clouded memories of the Pink Broom - perhaps because we tend to over-indulge during the event!
One can safely say there has been a Pink Broom, in some format, from the early days of the organization, starting out at UBC in 1983-84, until today -- more than a quarter century of fun!
